Wind Rivers

Multi-Day Hiking Trip around Big Sandy Lake in the Wyoming Wind Rivers 08.05.2020 - 08.09.2020

__________________________________________________________________________________________
This is my first attempt at doing a more in-depth trip report  complete with some maps, links, photos, and captions. This trip was one I had been wanting to do for a long time. I had never been in the Wind River Mountains before this trip and had it boiled down to either this Cirque De Towers hike or a journey farther north to Titcomb Basin. Ultimately the decision was made to explore the Big Sandy Lake area with a few different hikes planned. The button below will take you to the AllTrails trip map that we used as the basis and preplanning for our 5 day trip. If you like what you see, feel free to reach out and let me know if there are any questions you may have. Enjoy and thanks for taking the time to check it out!
Trip Total Hiking: 44.1 Miles

Day 1 - August 5th, 2020
Big Sandy Trailhead (Elev. 9100')
to
Big Sandy Lake (Elev. 9700')
9.1 Mile Day
Didn't take a lot of pictures this day, was just focused on getting to camp with our heavy packs. The parking lot was completely full on arrival at the trailhead, obviously a lot of people were going to be up there and we wanted to make sure we got some good spots to setup for the week. We loaded up and beat feet up the hill.

9.8 Mile Day
We got a good nights rest and  woke up to a nice morning. Ate some chow and prepared for the hike up the mountain on Big Sandy Trail over to the Cirque De Towers. The kids and I didn't make it all the way, I didn't want to burn them out the 1st day. We turned around  at about Arrowhead Lake deciding not to go up and over Jackass Pass. But I'll be back!  It was fun seeing the climbers on WarBonnet peak, pretty good size climb!

The morning view from camp a little after sunrise.

Starting the first hill climb. View from a nice spot overlooking Big Sandy Lake.

We also had to take the first pit stop, Leilah's already chowing down the snacks!

Ready to get back at it!

Where's Waldo. Can you spot the climbers?

As far as the kids wanted to go. We turned around while the rest of the crew continued on to Jackass Pass.

Heading back down the hill.

Break time. We were in no hurry to get back to camp.

Stopped at North Lake for a nice family portrait .

When we got back to camp, we setup the tent in a new spot and then it was Nap Time! Overall, it was a great day with awesome views.

Woke up feeling pretty good  and in time to setup the camera and get some shots of the Sun starting to peek over Big Sandy Mountain. We would get the whole group together and hike up to Black Joe Lake for a day of fishing and relaxing. We loaded up the day packs and chairs and set out.

Sunrise on Day 3, Beautiful morning!

The rays are starting to hit the tent , time to get everyone going!

Ethan after rolling out of the bag.

Enjoying the sun and getting ready to get breakfast fired up. I must say the Mountain House biscuits and gravy were  amazing. 100% will bring again on future trips.

The path to Black Joe lake. Leilah was a little bit sore this morning, so we hung back from the group and took our time. Annie as usual was taking the lead and wishing we would hurry up!

Caught up with the group at the lake and started to get settled in for some sun and relaxation. Mason, Jaden, Trevor, Ruby, Marshall, Josh, Carson, and Leilah.

Moving onward from Black Joe Lake and decided to go up and over the hill to Clear Lake.

We have arrived at Clear Lake. Any questions?

Ethan's day pack load out (Which he has outright stolen from me). Camelbak Thermobak 3L, Pouch with Rain Jacket and Snacks, and the best piece of gear of all, a Sportsman's Warehouse backpacking chair.

Schiestler Peak

Back to camp. Time to do a little loungin in the Wilderness Innovations Silnylon Poncho/Hammock.

Look at that  amazing mug.

I think I see a couple happy animals.

Starting to get dark. Time for a fire and some grub!

Almost there. Belly's full and enjoying our time in the backcountry.

Stayed up a little while tonight to try and get a few astro shots. Brought the Sony A7RIV and Sigma 14mm F1.8 for this trip.

Clear Lake (Elev. 10,000')
t
Big Sandy Lake  (Elev. 9700')
8.1 Mile Day
Greeted the day feeling a little sore but also getting accustomed to being in the Mountains. Decided today would be an easier day with just a trip up to Clear Lake to relax and enjoy the views. Billy Goat and Billy Goat Jr. would be  doing the loop hike up to Temple/Deep Lakes and  down to Clear Lake to meet up with us. They left camp earlier in the morning to allow us to meet at a decent time. I will include a few photos of their loop hike, courtesy of Billy Goat. This would be the last full day we have in the Winds before it's time to hike out.

Annie getting her calories in for the day. She actually doesn't eat as much on these backcountry adventures, it's like she knows she needs to stay lean and mean.

Billy Goat doing what he does best.

Self Explanatory.

Ready to go. They might as well be through hikers by this point.

Aaaaaand We meet again.

Josh and Jaden passed by Miller Lake

Rapid Creek Falls above Miller Lake

Jaden next to the falls.

At the top.. Deep Lake

Ethan soaking up the sun.

Josh and Jaden about to drop down from Deep Lake.

Yep, we bring the frisbee everywhere.

Cool rocks and creek below Deep Lake.

The sky isn't looking so clear over Clear Lake now..

Straight from the Hamptons.

Well, well, look who finally showed up.

Sun out, rain in.

Jaden pulling out the high fashion. It's officially coming down now.

Haystack Mountain in all her glory.

Sun starting to peek back out after getting back to Big Sandy.

Pretty much sums it up after all that hiking around.

Back up and at it. Time for food and a bonfire for the last night on the mountain.

Still enough energy for the frisbee. Notice that it has shrunk in size..

One of my favorites from the trip.

Still at it.

Uh oh. What's about to happen?

It's getting real now. Don't cross her!

Josh and I hiked back to the Big Sandy overlook to take some more astro shots. Love how these turned out.

Day 5 - August 9th, 2020
Big Sandy Lake  (Elev. 9700')
t
Big Sandy Trailhead (Elev. 9100')
8.6 Mile Day
Last day in the Winds. Time to get up and hike back to the trailhead. Luckily it is mostly downhill back to the parking lot. Loaded the bags and beat feet down the hill. Didn't take many pictures this morning, we were set on getting out in a timely fashion, which we managed to do. We soaked our feet for few a minutes in the Big Sandy River (which felt amazing) then cruised out through the desert and made our way to the Farson Mercantile. Here we were met with a long line and truly amazing ice cream cones. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend stopping here. From there we split ways and drove the few hours back home and to civilization again. It really was a great trip with good friends and great views. I can't wait to go back.
